Kingsman Leatherware makes premium leather bags, belts, and accessories. The bags are what really interest me. Particularly because they are very detailed about their construction.
I really like when bag makers are transparent about their construction. Anytime I see imported or undisclosed canvas / leather weights I become wary. That is why I was so happy when I stumbled on Kingsman’s Kickstarter. Not only are their leather bags beautiful but they are guaranteed for life and made in the USA.
Leather Bag Construction
The briefcase and messenger bag list 7oz Horween leather bodies and 9oz straps. The duffel lists 5-7oz body and 9oz straps. To put that in perspective Saddleback uses 4-5oz leather and Saddleback bags are tough as nails. Most companies don’t or won’t list their leather weights at all.
The Horween Leather Company is special because of their focus on quality. They are based in Chicago, IL and have been producing high quality leather for more than a 100 years. Their goal is to be the worlds best leather producer and to never cut corners or mistaking fastest or cheapest with the best.
Solid brass buckles, D-rings and clasps and hand set copper rivets round out the hardware. Lastly the seams are stitched together with polyester thread which is much more durable than cotton or nylon thread.
Design
All three bags look like they are well thought out and are of a popular style. The messenger bag and briefcase both use a flap to keep them closed and both have carry handles. I like the briefcase’s handle better as it looks sharp and is on top of the bag. The messenger bag’s handle is on the top back of the bag. Likely this is to prevent wear and tear on the closure flap. The messenger also looks like the flap might not give full coverage where as the briefcase looks like it does.
My favorite is the duffel. Maybe its that English tan color but I imagine it aging very well. The handles look buttery and the interior has minimal organization features. Just like a good duffel should. Perhaps I like it best because I am daydreaming about weekend trips.
Summary
I really like seeing Kickstarter launch companies that make premium, durable, made in the USA products. Kingsman Leatherware has made a compelling set of bags. I have to reserve further judgement until I can actually get a hold of a finished product but I am very curious to see where they go from here.
